We Won 1st Place at BetterHack 2025! Building ReBAC for Better Auth
🏆 We Won 1st Place at BetterHack 2025! Building ReBAC for Better Auth
Super excited to share that our team Dagim Tesfaye, Etsegenet Addisu, and I (Abel Shibabaw) won first place at the Better-Hack.io Hackathon 2025! 🎉
We took on a challenge that Better Auth hadn't yet solved: bringing ReBAC (Relationship-Based Access Control) to its authorization framework.
🔐 Why it matters:
While Better Auth currently supports RBAC and ABAC, it lacked the ability to make access decisions based on relationships like:
“User A can edit Folder B because they're part of the same team.”
That's where ReBAC, inspired by Google Zanzibar, comes in — enabling dynamic, context-aware, and share-based access models like those used in Google Docs and Drive.
🧩 Our Solution:
We built a Zanzibar-style ReBAC plugin for Better Auth that:
Defines relationship tuples for users, resources, and actions.
Implements fine-grained access policies using dynamic relationship checks.
Integrates seamlessly with Prisma and Better Auth's plugin ecosystem.
🙏 Gratitude:
None of this would have been possible without God's guidance, the unwavering support of my friends, and the spirit of not getting up until the very end. Every line of code, every late night, and every small breakthrough was fueled by faith, teamwork, and determination.
A huge thank you to the Better Auth team — especially KinfeMichael Tariku, Mohammed Ibrahim, Fraol Lemecha, Dagmawi Esayas, Temkin Mengistu, Mikiyas Tibebu — for hosting an amazing hackathon and creating such an inspiring space for innovation.
And of course, endless appreciation to my teammates Dagim Tesfaye and Etsegenet Addisu for their creativity, focus, and dedication throughout the journey!

Introducing the revamped Hope Enterprise University College website!
About two months ago, I, Dagim Tesfaye, and Mohammed Ibrahim noticed a common issue among university websites: many lacked appealing designs and valuable information. If a university claims to prepare you for the job market, it should reflect that in its online presence, right? So, we took action for my campus! Hope Enterprise University College

I'm pleased to announce that I and my team managed to get third place in the Kibur College 1st 24hrs hackathon. This was a great experience where we learned our strengths and weaknesses(feeling dizzy until now). I am very grateful to Desalegn Mekuria and Kibur College for making such a great event. I would also love to thank my lecturers and Codenight Community for leveling me up as a developer and boosting my skills to take on such challenges professionally.
